Mikimoto Pearl Necklace Once Only A Dream
Kokichi Mikimoto had a dream. "I would like to adorn the necks of all the women in the world with pearls." Mikimoto said this after culturing his first round pearl. He was on his way to creating the famed Mikimoto pearl necklaces.
In the mid 1800's Japan became increasingly involved in foreign trade and pearls were a part of that trade. The pearl oysters in Mikimoto's home town were dangerously over harvested and he spent every waking hour trying to seed oysters and create pearls.
On July 11, 1893, he created his first perfectly round cultured pearl. Once he had accomplished this his desire to research further grew. He set up a culturing station on Okinowa in 1914. Overcoming many hardships including numerous typhoons, he produced a 10mm pearl in 1931.
Encouraged he sent a team to Palau and they had considerable success culturing pearls. He encouraged the growth of the pearl industry in many small islands and his name was spoken reverently by the natives.
Mikimoto wanted to make pearls more accessible and opened a store in Tokyo. It was a modern white building and customers were attended by well dressed young men. Every display was devoted to showcasing the pearl at its best.
Mikimoto pearl necklaces were all the rage. The Mikimoto Pearl store combined Kokichi's unique sense of style with Western marketing. It was the first store to feature pearl jewelry.
