The black pearl is produced naturally by the oyster. There are black freshwater pearls, but they are often dyed or chemically treated to achieve the color. Before the advent of culturing pearls, black ones were rare indeed. Black pearls are often called South Sea pearls by mistake.

South Sea pearls are from the larger South Sea pearl oyster, which cannot be found in lagoons, but require diving in deep water to obtain. The black pearls form the black-lipped oysters have come to be called Tahitian black pearls. The culturing process for the Tahitian black pearls dictates a smaller output; thus they are more valuable.

Cultured freshwater black pearls are more numerous and a bit more affordable. Black pearls can be made into strands of pearls, necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets.

If you want to try out black pearl jewelry, earrings are probably the least costly option, but you may get hooked on their unique beauty and want to expand your jewelry wardrobe to include other black pearl pieces.
